per hour than the company’s three-man KBA Rapida 105,
installed in 2000. A key attribute of the new press is faster
makereadies.
It also has a Pamarco Sentinel ink system, which informs
the press operators about the ink status, including how
much ink a job uses, allowing them to save about 25 per-
cent per job.
Keeping an eye on efficiency is key to SCT-Texas’ success,
and it’s accomplishing this feat by steadily reinvesting to
improve operations.
Another new endeavor is the custom data collection
system called “shop floor” that takes place via computer at
each machine.
Before the plant’s IT department developed the system
in house, the machine operators used pen and paper to log
their data. This paperwork then flowed through the front
office where someone had to manually enter the details
into a spreadsheet. The savings is about 15 hours a month
in data entry.
The plant also has improved efficiency on its two Bobst
SP 104-ER Autoplaten Diecutters with blanker sections by
adding the Quick-Lock system. The investment is expected
to pay for itself in less than a year by reducing set-up times by
62 percent. The new system also has reduced waste because
fewer sheets are being used during the set-up process.
About three-quarters of SCT-Texas’ business comes from the food
segment. Consumer goods and light pharmaceutical make up the rest.
What does the future hold for SCT-Texas? As volume
increases – and with the addition of the new press – Miller
anticipates adding a third shift.
But in the short term the plant is maintaining the status
quo. It’s been an intense couple of years.
“I’ve learned a lot more than I expected,” Miller says.
